The Romans

 

The Primary 1 to 3 class all made models of Roman artefacts over the half term break - here are the fantastic results of their work.

A Roman Litter

These were a Roman mode of transport and, early in the Roman Republic, litters were only used to carry the sick. But later they made it so litters were to carry the rich with slaves. 4-8 slaves carried a litter.

 

 

 

 

Roman Sandals

Romans called sandals Soleae, crepidae or sandalias in Latin. This is a boys or mans pair of sandals. Important people had sandals with thicker soles, more straps and dyes. Ladies were more ornate. Roman army sandals had studs on the soles.

 

 

 

 

The Roman Centurion's Helmet

This is a Roman Centurions's helmet.  It is different to an ordinary Roman soldier's helmet because a Centurion's helmet had feathers. it has ear flaps and a neck guarder.  It is made of metal.

Romans Dagger

The pugie was a dagger used byRomans soldiers as sidearm.  There are 5 basic types of short swords each with its own advantages.

 

 

The Roman Helmet

The Roman helmet was made of iron, bronze or brass.  The helmet was bowl-shaped with a neck guard.  The inside was lined with leather to protect the soldiers' head.  A galea was Roman soldiers helmet.

 

 

The Faceguard

It covers your face.  It protects your eyes, nose and mouth.  The Romans wore them when they were fighting.

The Helmet

The helmet part protected your head and neck.  They had red feathers all down their helmet. 

 

Oil Lamp

The Romans used oil lamps like the electric lamps we use today.  It was made of clay.  They put oil in it and a wick.  They let the wick soak up the oil and they lit it.


 

 The Laurel Crown

 

 A crown worn by the emperor .  So people knew how special he was. 

 

Roman Shield

The Roman army used shields to protect thereselves.  They also used shields to make the famous tortoise formation.  This one was found inside Turkey and was made in 2BC.

(Scutum)

Historians found a rectangular Romans sheild in Syria.  It was red with patterns.  A rectangular shield is called a "Scuta".
